Mega Man Reviews

September 1st 2008 14:59
Well, I decided to have a bit of a change in plans. Instead of separate blogs for each of the remaining Mega Man games, I've decided to lump them together into one. With Mega Man 9 coming around the corner, it would be best to not waste anymore time. I'm going to divide the blog itself up right here with different reviews.

Mega Man 6
The last installment on the NES and it went out with a bang. The difference in this game was that four robot masters are fake bosses and you don't obtain the letters required to spell out Beat. You only get one chance if you win to get it right. If however you die and get a Game Over, what you can do is go back to that stage and try again. The biggest hint I can give on this would be the one that's the hardest path. Any path that is real easy will just give you the robot master weapon but not the letters. I would get them anyway just for complete purposes.

The beginning of the plot is that there were robots competing in a tournament and it's sponsored by the mysterious Mr. X. He revealed his true intentions to take over the world and claimed he was the master mind behind all these robot attacks and not Dr. Wily. That was a twist in the story and you wouldn't expect it. After defeating the robot masters, you then go to Mr. X's castle and defeat him. Of course, you learn that Mr. X is none other than Dr. Wily directly. Then you go to Wily's castle and stop him.

He gets captured and then finally sent to jail. It was necessary to happen and it got a bit obvious about him getting away constantly. There is a hidden item in the game called a Weapon Balance machine. Its purpose is to fill your weapons up without having to go into your items directly. That became a good feature for Mega Man 7 & Mega Man & Bass.

Mega Man 6 Review

Mega Man 7
The only official Mega Man game that got on the SNES in the classic series. The attention had shifted to Mega Man X because of it being the new Mega Man series. Personally, I didn't know about this one until I got Mega Man 8. You get a few things different about this game, which actually can be good. You are introduced to Bass, Mega Man's major rival now and wants to be the strongest robot master of them all. There are bolts in this game on where you can buy items. There is a super bolt that you have to give Auto and you basically get a discount on items. He's the other new character in this and there's a shop.

There is an intro stage, which would be a common theme used in the Mega Man X games so it would be no surprise if that idea came from there. The plot is that Dr. Wily's robots broke him out of jail and you must stop him from taking over the world. The format of the robot masters is actually quite similar to the Mega Man Game Boy games. There is a password to have all eight be seen at the same time. You don't get to go to two different palaces but you fight Bass overall three times.

All in all, this one was enjoyable and a good one. I personally think the NES ones were the best ones but that's just a matter of opinion really in the end.

Mega Man 7 Review

Mega Man 8
This was significant as this one appeared on the PlayStation and Sega Saturn but no Nintendo system. Nintendo lost some key franchises during that time of transition because of their belief on the N64 being cartridge based. The big difference is that you have animated cut scenes, which could have been better honestly. I think the voices they screwed up the most would be Mega Man and Dr. Light. Mega Man for obvious reasons if you've played it.

Unlike Mega Man 7, you are really limited on finding bolts. There are only 39 in the PlayStation version, which really sucks in that sense. There are many upgrades you want to go with but have to be limited. The format is the same but the stage select has more of a world map shown. You only see half of it and when you get through them, you get to the mid-level area. There is the character Duo, which you get to know and he's on a mission to rid the world of Evil Energy.

After getting through Wily Palace, Mega Man gets infected with the Evil Energy, Duo saves him and then leaves. Wily's plot has been stopped again and retreats to another land. Though he does actually show a slight bit of concern to Mega Man but that's just from my observation. It's not a bad game but I would probably say that the SNES was better.

Mega Man 8 Review

Mega Man & Bass
This one took a page out of Mega Man X4 in the sense that you have two different characters you can play as. Mega Man or Bass with their own story and ending. They never interact with each other. This one brought out Bass as a bit of a rebel and one full of pride. He wants to be the one to destroy Mega Man and thinks no one is stronger than he is. It's funny to note that prior to Mega Man 9, some people within the Mega Man Community thought of it as that but it was never confirmed by Capcom.

It was originally released on the Super Famicom back in 1998 but never saw a U.S. release at that time due to the Nintendo 64 being on the market and Nintendo wanting to shift attention towards it. That is probably the reason right there and it isn't because it wasn't too hard because it really isn't. It's more of a case of poor timing on the game being ready.

Onto the game itself, you fight a blob monster at the beginning of the game and then you get a strange robot master stage selection. Why is it strange you ask? In order to get to some robot masters, you have to defeat some in order to get there and eventually get to King's stage.

The plot is King was created and was getting all the Data CDs and you have to find them. This was part of Dr. Wily's plan to rule the world once and for all. It's a pretty simple and straightforward plot. You don't need to get too fancy to get the point across. You play as either Mega Man or Bass.

I find this game to be solid overall and really probably could have been an SNES game. It's acceptable for the GBA.

Mega Man & Bass Review

Final Thoughts
I hope Mega Man 9 becomes a great game. When I get it, I will review it personally and I have high hopes it's going to be really enjoyable. Enjoy.
